PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is increasingly being used in various medical applications. From musculoskeletal injuries to skin imperfections and the O-Shot® for greater sexual pleasure, the healing power of PRP can be beneficial for many different concerns. Recent research is showing that one such concern is a lichen sclerosus, a skin condition that most often affects post-menopausal women. We are excited to see that symptoms of lichen sclerosus are responding to PRP growth factors from the O-Shot®.
What is Lichen Sclerosus?
Lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes white patches of skin on the external genitalia. It’s uncommon, but most frequently impacts women after menopause or before puberty. Symptoms of lichen sclerosus in women are usually seen around the vulva and/or perianal region. As well as white, patchy and smooth or wrinkled skin, patients may experience redness, pain, intense itching, burning, skin tearing, bleeding, and painful intercourse. Severe cases may involve sores that may bleed or blister, as well as scarring of the vulva. In mild cases of lichen sclerosus, there may be no symptoms.
The exact cause of lichen sclerosus is unknown, though it’s thought to be linked to hormonal imbalance or an overactive immune system. It’s not contagious, but it increases peoples’ risk of squamous cell carcinoma in the affected skin.
PRP For Lichen Sclerosus Treatment
Given that lichen sclerosus is chronic, it can cause distress and problems with self-confidence in intimate settings. In the past, treatment included the use of topical corticosteroids. Now, studies have shown that PRP can be an effective treatment for the management of lichen sclerosus.
PRP injections can speed up the healing process and reduce inflammation of the tissues affected by lichen sclerosus. By helping to heal the damaged tissue, PRP can provide significant relief from lichen sclerosus symptoms.
